When a person subscribes to your list, what do you do? Of course, the long-term plan with your subscribers is to add them into your regular content marketing – email marketing / newsletters or even text marketing. But, what happens in the immediate aftermath of subscription? This is your opportunity to use welcome sequences to set up the future.
In the moment when someone new is added to your list, you don’t always know how much they know about your business. Maybe you met them at a networking event, you did get a thorough introduction, and then you manually added them to your list. Just as often, someone signs up automatically, and they end up on the same list whether they have any familiarity with your business or not.
This is where welcome sequences come in!
What would you want to tell people to onboard them to your business? How can you make sure that everyone who ends up on your list is given a foundation that will set them up to better receive all of your future content?

When it comes to giving your audience that foundation, what are some of the things that you can share with them?
- Values – Help root your new subscribers in what your brand stands for. This allows them to feel more committed to your brand before they start receiving regular content, which may make them more likely to open the content you send down the road.
- Stories – Again, you want your new subscribers to feel a connection to your business or the people behind it. One great way to do that is to tell stories. You could share your origin story and a sense of who is behind the scenes and help them understand the community that is your business.
- Offerings – After you have rooted your audience in who you are, make sure you tell them what is available to them. Help them navigate what they can buy from you and what might be right for them.
- Top Content or FAQs – Share some of your best content or answers to questions that often come up in your business. This is a great chance to educate your subscribers and make sure they all have a consistent base of knowledge.
Depending on what tool you are using to reach out, you can also decide how many messages belong in your welcome sequences. If you only have the opportunity to send one message, use it wisely! If you have the chance to break up your nurturing over multiple messages, you can have a more slow burn approach – and perhaps shorter messages each time to keep them engaged.
New subscribers deserve attention! They have shown that they want to know more about you. They took a meaningful action to get to know your business better. Take care of them!

You would be surprised how often business owners have NO follow-up planned for their lists. Unfortunately, having no plan tends to lead to the scenario where you realize that it’s been years since you messaged your subscribers, and they are now ice cold leads. This is a waste of the effort that went in to getting those people to sign up for your list in the first place, and it is avoidable.
The great news about creating a welcome sequence is that it is something you think about once, you set it up, and then you let it run in the background while you do other things. So, carve out some time now to set up your welcome sequences so you can take good care of your audience. They deserve it!
