Limiting Beliefs

Read this week’s guest blog by Coach Tomi, owner of Life, Business & Executive Coaching – Tomi Dagan, on the idea of limiting beliefs and why it’s important to challenge them!

I have a question for you. What are your “limiting beliefs”? By limiting beliefs I mean those thoughts that repeat in your head and tell you that you can’t or you don’t have the capacity to do something. Can you think of your specific limiting beliefs?

If you found some – great, hold on to them for a minute. If you need help then ask yourself what is stopping you right now from reaching what you really want? Are your limiting beliefs related to a basic disbelief in yourself? Are you thinking things like “I don’t have it in me” or “I don’t have the capabilities to get what I want”? Are the limiting thoughts related to a fear of failure, like “How would I deal with myself if I don’t succeed” or “What will other people think if they see I didn’t make it?”  Or maybe your limiting beliefs are related to external factors such as “It can’t happen due to the economy” or “I can’t do this during the pandemic.”  

Hopefully these questions brought up some of your limiting beliefs. These repetitive thoughts that constantly run in your mind are impeding your ability to reach your true potential. These doubts creep in because your mind is influenced by what you think of yourself, your past experiences, the good days and the bad, successes and failures. The brain takes this mishmash and computes it all together to produce thoughts of what you can and cannot do.

This automatic process influences your work, your love life, your happiness and so much more. It is as simple as that. Thankfully, it doesn’t end there.

The fact that your brain thinks you can’t do something does not necessarily mean that in reality you can’t. It just means that a largely subconscious set of thoughts is produced in your brain based on your past and repeats itself often enough to reinforce and assert itself. This automatic process creates limiting beliefs in you. 

Can you look back at a time you thought you could not accomplish something but ended up doing it anyway and actually succeeded regardless of these beliefs? What happened that you were able to overcome these debilitating doubts and fears? If you are like most people, you probably put your fears and past experiences aside and just went for it. 

You might have also utilized one of the amazing faculties of your brain – imagination – to make that dream a reality. Meaning you envisioned, produced images in your mind where you saw yourself overcoming that hurdle, and that image helped you go after what you wanted as it became more real. The rule of thumb is always if you can’t imagine it, you can’t accomplish it.

So what does all of this mean for you and your personal and professional growth?

Many people go through life fully believing their limiting beliefs and do not achieve their full (I would argue minimal) potential. Yet more and more people are able to challenge their limiting beliefs and go after what they want, thus putting those beliefs to test! 

Many of those who do challenge their limiting beliefs reap fantastic rewards. If you learn how to challenge your limiting beliefs, you will start to achieve much more than you would by going through life on autopilot. If you learn to do this consistently it will eventually become a habit, and those shackling repetitive thoughts in your mind will continuously lose power. Moreover, when you actively challenge your limiting thoughts time and again, while backing them up with real action to prove those thoughts are false, not only will you start to believe in yourself and your capabilities, but your mind will catch up as well and avail itself to new and exciting possibilities.
