Top Tip for Navigating the Latest Facebook Changes

For those who use Facebook, you may have noticed that Facebook rolled out changes to its look in August 2020.  If you use Facebook for business, you may have found that the changes impacted a variety of functions and features for you.  Today, I wanted to give you a quick tip that may help you as you transition the way you work to the changes of the new platform.

I’ll be honest, there are a number of ways that I used Facebook for my own business or for client businesses that were impacted, and for the last month I have been taking an inventory of which features have changed and adapting how I do my work.

Some of the things that have been a big deal for me from the personal www.facebook.com side have been the inability to see pages liked by other pages, bugs in their notifications pane that prevent me from seeing notifications, streamlining of their search feature so you can no longer sort search results by month but instead but year, and stripping down the activity timeline so you can no longer scroll to specific months or days.

We all use social media platforms differently, and those are things that impact me.  I encourage you to come up with your own list now so that you can troubleshoot and get back on track.

In the process of finding new ways to do what I need to do, I have leaned heavily on one top tip: You can still access the old business page look by going in through the business manager.

What does that mean?  Instead of using www.facebook.com/MelissaForziatEvents, I would use business.facebook.com/MelissaForziatEvents to access my page.  You can use the business manager side of Facebook and – at present – you will still see the old look of business pages. Along with it, you will see much of the old functionality.

You can use business.facebook.com to access any business page, even those that you don’t manage.  So, if you had a tendency to do a lot of engagement on other pages as part of your community building strategy (and, this is an approach I highly encourage, which will be evident in some of the changed features I just listed that I spotted in my own travels), you may find it beneficial to use the business manager to view those other business pages so your movements are not as limited.

As you get acclimated to the new look of Facebook, this is a way for you to make sure you are still getting things done!

One other feature that took me a minute to adjust to was the different way that “sharing” posts is displayed.  If you are viewing a post as your business page (check the dropdown icon on the post to see if it is your business page’s profile or your personal profile that is the default), you will ONLY have the option to share a post from your – or any other – business page to a business page, group, or event you manage.  If you want to be able to share content to your personal profile, make sure to use the dropdown button on the profile picture icon so it reflects your personal profile.  (See the image below). That will give you the options you are looking for!  You used to be able to do this from the Share pop-up window. Now this needs to be done a step earlier.

This week’s tip is a simple one to help you keep moving forward, but as you continue to navigate the Facebook changes and see how it impacts your workflow, I encourage you to share any feature changes, fixes, or questions you have spotted below in the comments!

Many of the features I mentioned are features I use for engaging on other pages, which I consider a critical component of building your community.  If you are interested to learn more about Why Social Media Engagement is More Impactful than Posting, read here!
