Enjoy this week’s guest post from author and sustainable wellness coach, Laura Lake, and improve your mindset for success.
The biggest thing stopping you is YOU!
Look, being comfortable, safe, and avoiding conflict is a nice thought, but it doesn’t help you to get any closer to your definition of success. Being creative, innovating, and achieving new levels of outcomes all require getting out of your comfort zone and establishing a healthier relationship with yourself.
First, let’s establish this foundational belief:
“I am my greatest asset in life, and my mind is my greatest tool.”
If you don’t feel it as truth yet, start by saying “I’d like to think that…”
Say it again, and say it out loud. Good, now let’s build on this belief.
What makes YOU your greatest asset?
An asset is something or someone of use or value. “I may be applying for this job/contract, but really my clothes, this computer program, and my car are going to be doing all the work.” Ah, no…YOU are. Your possessions have nothing to do with your potential or the value of your future.
How do you add value to your future? Easy. Do things you enjoy, with people you care about, making a difference in the world outside of yourself, all while facing the challenges that occur along the way. The world rewards us for owning who we are and adding value through the unique set of experiences we have.
There will be lots of opportunities to learn and grow if you’re ready to see them and are paying attention. These opportunities are usually hidden somewhere within those challenges because they are Not. Meant. For everyone.
In order to up your potential value, you must build character, practice skills, be willing to learn and adapt, have standards and boundaries, and have an understanding of what’s important to yourself and others. Others do not choose or do these things for you. Only you have the power and capacity to make those decisions.
YOU decide how you will enjoy life. YOU decide the balance between activities & effort. YOU decide the realization of your abilities. YOU decide how to handle the challenges you face.

How is your MIND your greatest tool?
If we are our greatest asset, then what would cause the biggest depreciation? Poor health. Many people like to talk about health as being mostly diet & exercise, but if we dig deeper to the root of our exterior behaviors it’s mostly psychological. Your mind plays a huge role in everything, and I mean everything, you do.
Our “main brain,” or the one in our head, is the command center that controls the inflow and outflow of information. This information is gathered from various parts of the body about our environment. Getting proper sleep and rest is like pressing the reset/self-clean button. Once in better working order, you can more efficiently process all the data that comes in through your 5 (or more) senses.
We create our own reality based on how we process this data. It’s done through our own unique set of mental filters. These filters are a collection of experiences, beliefs, social conditioning, etc, that elicit both physical & emotional reactions.
We will respond based on our self-awareness, self-management, and self-regulation.
How do we use these skills to get ahead? Many ways. First we identify, understand and evaluate with self-awareness. Second, we implement a plan with habits, routines, and processes through self-management. Last we analyze, evaluate, and shift direction through self-regulation. We problem solve.
YOU choose how to respond. YOU choose your perception of reality. YOU choose what to focus on. YOU choose your motivation.

Have you noticed a pattern?
We’ve talked about a lot of things but there’s a pattern to it all. Most of the time, the reason we fail is because (take a deep breath – let it out slowly) of ourselves.
We let that voice in our head create an unhealthy relationship with us. The voice really does love us, but it thinks keeping us safe is the highest form of showing that love. Show it some compassion. Say, “Thank you for your input but I’m setting some boundaries.”
The biggest thing stopping you is YOU. Are you ready to start talking about the real reasons we self-sabotage and get to the root of the problem? If so, I’d LOVE for you to join the conversation on social media. Use the hashtag #BEDMASlife.
