A Thyroid Journey

Last year, I made a profound decision. I leaped out of my full-time teaching career to embrace my dream of working as a creative entrepreneur in the health and wellness industry.

Entrepreneurship runs in my family. My father was a successful entrepreneur who preached independence from as early as I can remember. It is etched into my DNA. It’s no coincidence I have always struggled with the notion of a traditional “career path”.

I have been a librarian for over twenty years and have a Master’s degree in Medical Librarianship (MLIS), i.e. I am an information geek. My passion is in health and nutrition. So in 2016 I returned to school and graduated from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN). Initially, I went to IIN to learn more about holistic ways of healing the body. I had been struggling with Hashimoto’s autoimmune thyroid disease for over a decade and educating myself on using food as medicine and integrative health. After graduation, life events led me back into classroom teaching and it would be a few years before I gained the insight and clarity to recommit to my path. I experienced an immense health shift and became a health coach and blogger.

My niche was obvious. I am a health enthusiast with over fourteen years of personal and medical experience with thyroid disease. I help women with thyroid disease learn how to heal their bodies naturally and avoid years of struggle and sickness. I want to help clients beyond my immediate geography and using flexible tools so I focused my efforts on learning how to build an online health coaching business.

I enrolled in wellness business courses to learn more about niche clientele, technology, blogging, sales funnels, and online marketing. I created goals and worked toward my dream of becoming an entrepreneurial health coach. The momentum was palpable through the summer but, as happens in August, school started and I would lose my footing.  I would find myself back in the tunnel of busyness and exhaustion that accompanies a full-time teaching job, raising kids, and balancing family. My coaching business was limited to creating my initial website and writing monthly blog posts.

Last winter, my body began communicating with me, actually screaming at me. I had worked for years to regain my health and was pushing beyond a point of balance. I had failed to honor my passion and it was affecting my health and well-being. It was time for a change. I knew that to focus on my wellness business, I would have to leave my full-time job…

Splash!

I sought out local resources and learned of the Wyoming Small Business Development Center (SBDC), which has been incredibly helpful. It is through the SBDC that I met Melissa and gained her marketing expertise. With her support, I revamped my website and officially launched Tash Harris Thyroid Health Coaching. I am thrilled with the new website and creating a business that helps others heal. My launch continues to be a constant lesson in learning new skills, embracing change, and breathing through the anxiety and excitement that are fueling my energy and drive for success.

I end all of my blogs with the same tagline “It’s a journey…,” recognizing that the road to autoimmune/thyroid wellness doesn’t have quick fixes and black and white answers, but is more of a complicated journey of self-and health discovery. My business is part of this discovery. It’s been a piece of healing my body, acknowledging that our hardest feats can bring the greatest gifts, and discovering my truth.

Working hard for something we love is called passion.” Simon Sinek
