Pros and Cons of Linktree

In some online spaces, there is an uptick of business owners using Linktree as a digital tool to share multiple links (or multiple calls to action).  For a platform like Instagram, where you are limited on the number of live, clickable links you can have in your bio, this can be a handy solution. Linktree provides an avenue to load up all the links you wanted to share in your bio in one place.  However, in my opinion, there are cons as well as pros to using this service.  Let’s talk through some of the pros and cons of Linktree.

Pros

First, Linktree provides a platform where you can pile multiple links onto one page.  So, if you want to direct visitors to one page with multiple offers with simple buttons for each, Linktree allows you to create this easily.  For social media platforms that limit your ability to use live links, this is particularly helpful.  You can put one link in your social media profile to your Linktree, and every call to action you want to make can be there.

Linktree has a free version that lets you do most of what you need.  For a low cost, you can upgrade to a version that gives you more options to stylize your page a bit more.

Linktree is easy to use and update and does not require support from a developer to get you up and running.

Cons

If you can have a page of a website – your own website – that you use the same way you want to use Linktree, I consider that a far superior option.  You don’t own Linktree.  Linktree does.  So, whatever terms they have for your account are not set by you, and they can change their terms – or their entire business – at any time.

Further to that first con, all the traffic you drive to your page on Linktree is ultimately boosting Linktree’s search ranking.  Imagine if you could drive all that traffic over time to a page of your own website?  It would be nice to give yourself the gift of that traffic so that in the future you can boost your own website’s searchability.

Although you can customize more for style in a pro version of Linktree, it is still not the full branding and menu structure that you would have on your website.  If you want as much brand awareness as you can get and as much ability for someone to surf within the pages of your website as possible, you would want the customization that you get with a website instead.

Lastly, although you can use a page of Linktree to make multiple calls to action, the more calls to action you make, the more difficult it becomes to visually break them up for a visitor.  On your website, you have many options for formatting long pages to keep the audience’s interest.  On Linktree, you have a list of one button after another.  While you can mention everything that is important to you, keeping your visitor’s attention for that full list is another matter.

At the end of the day, I see Linktree’s services as trying to be a low-cost alternative for a website, but it still is not the same as having your own website.  I know so many of my clients are looking to market on a budget, and this could be a tool that helps you do that.  If you have the option of having a website to do everything this service does, I would recommend it!
